나의 새 프레임인 메트릭(Metric) 프레임의 상자를 처음 열었을 때, 나는 완전히 흥분해 있었다. 우선 프레임의 옆면이 굉장히 두꺼운 게 보였다. 놀랍게도 10mm 나 된다!! 매우 두껍게 만들어진 옆면 덕분에, 이 프레임은 세스 슬라이드를 하기에 정말 좋으며, 또 매우 단단한 느낌을 준다. 옆면이 10mm나 되고 H-블럭도 엄청나게 단단하면서도, 프레임이 매우 가볍다는 사실에 나는 놀라지 않을 수 없었다.

메트릭 프레임은 기존의 UFS 프레임과는 약간 다르게 만들어졌다. '센터 피스'(center pieces; 프레임을 부츠의 제 위치에 단단히 고정되도록 하는 부품. 제품 사진에서 UFS 고정 나사를 끼우는 곳에 있는 부분.)를 고정 해 주는 액슬 2개가 그것이다. 이 액슬을 풀어야만, 프레임을 부츠에서 떼어낼 수 있으며, 센터 피스는 부츠에 고정된 상태로 놔둘 수 있다. 센터 피스를 먼저 끼우고 액슬의 구멍을 맞춰 프레임을 고정시키느라 처음에는 시간이 좀 걸렸다. 내가 권장하는 프레임 장착 방법은 이렇다. 먼저 긴 액슬을 빼내고, 짧은 액슬만 끼워둔다. 그 다음 프레임 고정나사를 절반 정도 조인 후에, 긴 액슬을 다시 끼워넣는다. 그 후에, 프레임 고정나사를 완전히 조인다. 처음에는 프레임 몸체와 센터 피스의 위치를 맞추지 않고 액슬을 끼워넣으려고 해서 고생을 좀 했었지만, 센터 피스의 위치를 먼저 맞추고 나서 나사를 끼우니 식은 죽 먹기였다. 프레임을 부츠에 장착할 때 약간의 기교가 필요하다는 점이 메트릭 프레임의 '유일한' 단점이다.

프레임을 장착이 끝나자마자, 베어링 스페이서를 바꿔 넣고, 프레임에 바퀴를 끼운 다음, 곧바로 밖으로 나가 스케이팅을 할 준비를 했으나 비가 내리기 시작했다!! 비오는 날의 오후를 다시 Be-mag 게시판에서 보낼 수 밖에 없었다. 새 프레임을 사용해 보고 싶은 생각이 간절했는데, 다행히 그 다음날은 맑았다.

프레임을 처음 사용해 본 곳은 스케이트파크였다. 프레임이 처음에는 좀 뻑뻑한 느낌이었으나, 몇 번 그라인드를 하고 나니 약간 더 잘 밀리는 느낌이었다. 세스 슬라이드를 했을 때는 프레임이 정말 잘 받쳐줘서 놀랬다. 세스 슬라이드를 매우 안정적으로 할 수 있었고, 발이 확 미끄러지거나 바퀴가 걸려서 브레이크가 걸릴 걱정을 할 필요가 없을 만큼 주욱 잘 나갔다. 프레임의 바닥면과 부츠의 옆면만으로 중심을 잡을 수 있다. 프레임의 옆면은 정말 잘 밀려서 탑사이드 계열의 그라인드와 세스 슬라이드에서 아주 훌륭했다. H-블럭은 두꺼운 옆면 덕분에 매우 두껍게 되어있으며, 또 정말 단단하고 잘 밀리는 플라스틱으로 만들어져 있다.

스트리트 스케이팅도 정말 하고 싶었기에, 친구들이 파크에 도착하자마자 나는 친구들과 함께 스트리트 스케이팅을 하러 나갔다. 처음에는 나무로 된 벤치에서 그라인드를 시작했는데, 역시 잘 밀렸다. 

프레임이 제 값을 하는지 알아보기 위해서 벽돌로 된 렛지(ledge)에서도 잠시 스케이팅을 했다. 몇번 그라인드를 하고 나자, 부드러운 렛지에서 놀랍도록 잘 밀렸고, 거의 닳아지지도 않았다. 프레임이 약간 닳아진 후에는 레일에서도 믿을 수 없을 정도로 잘 밀렸다.
나는 이 프레임을 정말 사랑♡한다. 부드럽고 단단한(nice and sturdy) 주행감을 선사해 주며, 그라인드와 세스 슬라이드에서도 모두 훌륭한 성능을 보였다.

이상을 정리하면, 나는 메트릭 프레임에 9.5점(10점 만점)을 준다. 그리고 이 녀석을 한번 써보기를 권한다.

When I first opened the box to reveal my brand new pair of Metric Frames, I was totally stoked. The first thing I noticed was how thick the side walls are: an amazing 10mm thick!! Having the side walls so thick makes the frames really good for doing cess slides and gives them a really sturdy feeling. The frames also feel really light, which suprised me considering that their side walls are 10mm thick and their H-block is fully solid.

 

Metric frames are built slightly differently to other UFS frames, there are two extra axles which hold the center pieces, which fasten them on to the boot, in place. You can actually undo these extra axles and take the frame off the boot, leaving the pieces which fasten the frame to the boot in place. This took me a while to do at first, as you have to attatch the center pieces and line the hole which the axles pass through up with the frame in order to fasten them frame to the boot. I would reccomend taking out the longest axle that passes through the centre piece and leaving the shorter one in, then attatching the UFS screws until they are half-fastened, inserting the other axle, then fully tightening the UFS screw. I had a couple of problems with inserting the axle at first, as I didn't have the frame and the UFS centre piece lined up properly, but after i attatched the first one properly, it was a breeze. Finding that they were slightly tricky to attatch was the only downside to the frame.

 

As soon as I had finished attatching the frames, changing the spacers in my bearings, then putting on my wheels, I set out to go for a skate and it started raining!! It was back to the be-mag messageboard for me for the rest of the rainy afternoon. I was so anxious to try them out, and im glad it wasn't raining the next day.

 

The first place I tried the frames out was at the skatepark, they appeared to be a bit sticky at first, but after a few grinds they started to feel a bit more slippery. I was amazed at how well these frames performed when cess sliding, you can sit on the cess slide really nicely and just ride it out without having to worry about leaning your boot down to much and gripping up on your wheels. You can just balance on the side of your boot and the bottom of the frame. The side walls of the frame are also really slippery, which makes them excellent for topside grinds and cess slides. The h-block is really thick due to the thick walls of the frame, and is made out of a really nice hard, slippery plastic.

 

I was really eager to skate some street on these frames, so when they arrived at the park, we went for a street skate. First off I skated a wooden bench-to-bench, on which the frames performed nicely.
I wanted to give the frames a run for their money, so we went to a brick ledge for a session. These frames are amazingly slippery on smooth ledges, after the first few grinds, they were only showing a little to none wear. After they were worn in a little, they became AMAZINGLY slippery on rails.
I really LOVE these frames, they skate really nicely, they provide a nice and sturdy ride, and are great for both grinds and cess slides.

 

Overall I give them a 9.5/10 and insist that you give them a try.
